Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the job is to provide training and supervision to an inmate work force in a specified product line. The supervisor will train and supervise new Maryland Correctional Enterprise (MCE) employees. Responsible for assisting in the operation of Sew plant in JCI and fill in for plant manager as necessary.

POSITION DUTIES

The incumbent is responsible for training and supervising new MCE textile employees as well as an inmate work force in the operation of a manufacturing plant and for the production of related products.  These duties include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for assigned production process operating with full independence and reviewing the work of trainees
  • Trains civilian staff and inmate workers in production methods of specified product
  • Supervises assigned civilian and inmate workers in actual performance of the production process from determining raw materials to preparation for shipping
  • Set up and break down various production sequences  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  Two (2) years of experience in apparel manufacturing, textiles or related field.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will should have:
  • At least two (2) years of experience supervising employees; preferably a work force of 20-30 employees
  • Knowledge of all aspects of apparel manufacturing
  • Ability to establish production methods on new products
  • Ability to estabish and maintain quality control standards through manufacturing process.
  • Must be computer literate, including intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for institutional support staff during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for institutional support staff training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
Oral interview
A completed background investigation
Physical examination.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.
