Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to install, configure, and maintain the computer operating systems, network operating systems, file servers, database servers, and electronic vital records registration application systems used by the Vital Statistics Administration to collect, issue and maintain all Maryland vital records. These systems run on blade servers(compact arrays of processors) and file servers consisting of redundant arrays of independent disks(RAID) and require complex operating system and server software to maintain, monitor, and tune them for optimal performance. This position manages these multipurpose, multi-tasking system, developing programs and procedures to facilitate the efficient operation of these systems and to detect and alert staff to error conditions to minimize system downtime.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology related field to include course work in database management systems. A copy of your transcript should accompany your application or you may list relevant coursework on your application. Transcripts may be unofficial.

Experience: None.

Notes: 1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate plus thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or other information technology-related field to include course work in database management systems may be substituted for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and one year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining applications systems and programs using generally accepted computer programming languages or maintaining and modifying operating systems for computers may be substituted for the required education.

3. Experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining a tape library to process data on computer systems; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Database Administration classifications or Database Administration specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal applicant should have experience in administering large database systems (preferably MS SQL Server) and network operating systems. They should have training and experience in maintaining IT security at the database, operating systems, and network level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where the employee can be reached or will be furnished with a pager.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
