Introduction

The Maryland Department of Health’s Developmental Disabilities Administration oversees the operation the Potomac Center. The Potomac Center is a State Residential Center and is responsible for the provision of needed services to people who have intellectual disabilities admitted to the facility while working to integrate these people into less restrictive settings in the community.

LOCATION OF POSITION

MDH, Potomac Center, Washington County, MD

Main Purpose of Job

This position will be responsible for providing work placement, work training and work adjustment services to mentally ill patients or developmentally disabled clients within a pre-vocational development program within the Potomac Center. This position will: assist and be in charge of patients/clients performing tasks in a specific pre-vocational work setting such as horticulture, woodwork, housekeeping, sheltered workshop or linen services to ensure that activities are consistent with individuals treatment plans; assist in assessments of the pre-vocational capabilities and limitations of patients/clients in order to determine their interests, aptitudes, abilities and work histories through review of records and personal interviews; place patients/clients in an appropriate work setting; observe patients/clients participation during work adjustment activities and document observations in behavioral terms; attend in-service training programs; motivate patients/clients to achieve their optimum level of pre-vocational development; and, perform other related duties.

This position may be required to work weekends and holidays and may be subject to call in and overtime.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 credits from an accredited college or university with at least 15 credits in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences.

Experience: Two years of experience providing work placement, work training, and work adjustment services to mentally ill patients or developmentally disabled clients in a pre-vocational development program.

Note:

1. Applicants may substitute two additional years of experience as defined above for the required college credits.

2. Applicants may substitute a bachelor’s degree in vocational counseling or closely related field for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Career Counseling and Advisor classifications or Career Counseling and Advisor specialty codes in the Counseling field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in some positions may be required to operate vehicles which require a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. The appropriate motor vehicle operator’s license will be required.

3. Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in and, therefore, may be required to provide the facility with a phone number where they can be reached.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
