Main Purpose of Job

This position will follow up abnormal (genetic) newborn screening results reported to the Newborn Screening Follow-Up Unit by the Newborn Screening Laboratory. Each baby born in Maryland (approximately 70,000) is tested for 50+ hereditary disorders. Abnormal results are reviewed and evaluated for the appropriate intervention to resolve the case. This nursing position provides consultation to the baby's care provider, parent(s), and referral centers to facilitate rapid definitive diagnosis and initiation of treatment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in Nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five years of experiences as a Registered Nurse including one year of experience in an administrative, supervisory, consultative or teaching capacity.

Notes:

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or health-related field from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a Registered Nurse in an administrative, supervisory, consultative or teaching capacity may be substituted for the required education.

2. A PhD in Nursing from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Nursing classification or Nursing specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant will have experience in pediatric nursing for children with special health care needs, preferably with special care nursery or NICU experience.  The successful applicant will also have good oral and written communication skills in order to communicate abnormal blood spot screening results and discuss possible conditions with primary care providers, parents and specialists. Outreach and education to primary care practices is also needed regarding conditions on the newborn screening panel, unsatisfactory specimens, appropriate specimen collection and interpretation of reports.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.  A copy of your current license or license verification must accompany your application

2.  Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
