Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide community health nursing services to individuals, families and the community; work with professionals from other disciplines to plan and implement nursing services for health programs in schools, day care centers, clinics and other settings; participate in identifying community health needs and participate in the development of solutions using health department and community resources; assess the current health status of the patient, identify nursing needs, develop and implement a plan of patient care in conjunction with other members of the health team and the patient; provide the nursing care intervention identified in the care plan as delineated in the Nurse Practice Act (medication administration, tracheostomy care, IV therapy, sterile dressings, etc.); evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and revise the patient care plan as necessary; record health status of patients, treatments administered, and other appropriate information in the patient's record and report to the patient's physician and to the nursing supervisor as indicated; educate and assist patients in understanding present health status, developing self-care measures and improving and maintaining maximum health care status; provide counseling, guidance, and education necessary in the treatment of physical, mental, and emotional health problems to patients and their family members and other caregivers; make appropriate referrals to a variety of community resources; participate in the investigation of communicable diseases; maintain accurate statistics; participate in community health events involving health promotion and disease prevention programs; participate in nursing research as assigned; and perform other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Determined by the Maryland State Board of Nursing under the licensing requirements for Registered Nurse.

Experience:  None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215. A copy of your license must be attached to your application. 

2.  Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number at which they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
