Introduction

This is a supervisory level of law enforcement at the Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation.  The position supervises lower-level police officers and other security personnel. THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO CURRENT DLLR EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide first level supervision to Police and Building Guards that provide security services for the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation at 1100 N. Eutaw Street and other DLLR owned facilities and remote field offices and to enforce laws, rules and regulations that govern the State of Maryland. This position relates to the agency's mission in that it provides consistent and dependable support for all DLLR units and employees who, through their efforts, provide economic stability to the citizens of Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Supervise police officers and building guards.

Ensure posts are staffed.

Train and instruct police officers.

Testify in court when appropriate, coordinate staff efforts in the enforcement of criminal laws and agency rules and regulations.

Create and monitor staffing schedules.

Monitor camera surveillance system.

Maintain all security certifications and quality yearly on firearms requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Three years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Notes:

1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.

2. An Associate degree from an accredited college in law enforcement, criminology or related social sciences may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year supervisory experience - approving and disapproving leave, assigning duties to police and security personnel, preparing reports and reviewing and approving work of lower-level Police or Security Officers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship Must be at least 21 years of age Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history Oral interview Physical examination Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a phone number or where they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis, as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
