Main Purpose of Job

This full-time position sits in the Office of Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology (OMCHE) and is responsible for designing and conducting epidemiologic analysis and surveillance to identify determinants of maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes in Maryland. Epidemiologic analyses conducted and presented by this position will be used to make data driven recommendations for the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Bureau. Major responsibilities include developing and maintaining MCH data collection systems; designing and conducting epidemiologic studies; directing evaluation studies; analyzing datasets; providing technical assistance; responding to data requests; and presenting and publishing analysis results. This epidemiologist also assists and guides other professional staff in the OMCHE in undertaking various research and evaluation studies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics. A copy of your graduate transcripts must accompany your application.  Transcripts may be official or unofficial.

Experience: Three years of experience as an epidemiologist subsequent to receipt of the Master’s degree.

Note: 1. Candidates may substitute a Doctoral degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of six graduate courses in Epidemiology and three graduate courses in Biostatistics for the required education and experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science  classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.   

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience must have involved epidemiological research related to maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes to produce a report, brief, journal article or presentation.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have:

Familiarity with epidemiological concepts in addition to maternal and child health policies and programs at the state and federal level.

Experience developing and presenting reports and presentations to convey complex statistical analysis for lay audiences.

At least one year full time experience with SAS preferred.

Experience with other statistical software is accepted.

Candidates should be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
