Main Purpose of Job

The Prevention and Health Promotion(PHPA) Administration's mission is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases, helping impacted persons live longer, healthier lives, and protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards. The Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB) works in partnership with local health departments, providers, community based organizations, and public and private sector agencies to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring, and treatments of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards.

This position will support all of Maryland local health departments in carrying out activities that improve the understanding of heath care associated infections and antibiotic resistance (HAI/AR). By increasing local capacity to effectively respond to cases or outbreaks in their jurisdiction, this position will aid in efforts to reduce the incidence of HAI/AR throughout Maryland. The position will focus on a variety of issues, including (but not limited to) Clostridium difficile infections, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, and emerging drug-resistant pathogens such as candida auris. In addition to local health departments, the individual in this position will work closely with internal MDH partners, a variety of healthcare facilities across the healthcare spectrum, other state agencies, and federal partners.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in BiostatisticsA copy of your graduate transcripts must accompany your application.  Transcripts may be unofficial.

Experience: None

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science  classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate should have strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent skills using database and analytic software.  The preferred candidate should also be able to manage multiple simultaneous tasks.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
