Introduction

This is an agency specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service. This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies for this classification. The resulting certified eligible list will be maintained for one year (or extended) and may be used for similar positions in this or other state agencies.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Gwynnbrook Wildlife Management Area, Owings Mills, MD (Baltimore County)     

Millington Wildlife Management Area, Massey, MD (Kent County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wildlife and Heritage Service, is currently accepting applications for two (2) Natural Resources Technician I positions. One position will be based out of the Millington Wildlife Management Area, located in Massey, Maryland (Kent County) and the second position will be based out of the Gwynnbrook Wildlife Management Area, located in Owings Mills, Maryland (Baltimore County).

The selected candidates will work closely with agency personnel to conduct habitat management projects, maintain / repair facilities / equipment, coordinate public uses, and assist with wildlife surveys / research on Wildlife Management Area's, other DNR owned or controlled properties, and certain private properties in the region for the purpose of wildlife conservation and public recreation. These positions require a basic knowledge of land management practices, farming equipment maintenance / repair / use, vehicle maintenance / repair / use, basic wildlife species identification, and the application of standard wildlife management techniques.

Note: The positions require field work in adverse conditions and may require heavy lifting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

1. Experience operating farm equipment, heavy equipment and power tools is preferred.

2. Experience maintaining and repairing farm equipment and/or heavy equipment is preferred.

3. Knowledge and/or experience with habitat management techniques are preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
