POSITION DUTIES

This position is located within the Business Tax Unit of the Field Audit Section in the Compliance Division. The incumbent will be responsible for auditing taxpayers at an intermediate level for Compliance with Maryland Business Tax Laws. Duties include auditing taxpayers records to ensure Compliance with Maryland's Business Tax Laws using established audit standards and procedures at an intermediate level, preparing work papers to illustrate and substantiate audit findings using established office procedures, prepare reports at an intermediate level to communicate results using standard forms, and interpret and enforce tax laws and regulations at an intermediate level in order to advise taxpayers and ensure compliance using the Maryland Annotated Code and COMAR.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with six credit hours in accounting and fifteen credit hours in related courses (e.g., business finance, economics, business administration, information technology).

Experience: One year of experience performing revenue field auditing or outside tax auditing.

NOTES:

  1. Two years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles or professional auditing experience may substituted for the required experience.
  2. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may substituted for the required experience.
  3. A Master’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may substituted for the required experience.
  4. Additional experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles or professional auditing experience may substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in accounting and budget classification or accounting and budget specialty codes in the auditing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Only applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications for this recruitment will be considered for this opportunity. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience. Due to the nature of this list, all qualified applicants are placed on an unranked list of candidates and will remain active on this list for at least one year.  

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
