Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to make minor repairs and alterations on floors, windows, furniture, and other wooden structures or appurtenances; caulk doors and windows; change filters, check and maintain sewer lines and clean traps; repair extension cords; oil and lubricate electrical or mechanical equipment and machines; prepare interior and exterior walls, ceiling, floors and other building surfaces by washing, brushing, and sanding and scraping; apply paints, varnishes, stains, waterproofing agents and other protectives; make minor repairs to grounds construction such as roadways, walkways, footbridges and retaining walls; patch block, brick and stone walls; apply water-proofing agents to such walls; assist Grounds Keeper in maintenance of lawns and shrubbery; build, construct, and/or erect wooden and wire fencing; may inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to institutional safety and sanitary regulations; may drive automobiles, pick-up and panel trucks, and tractors; may operate power mowers; may assist Stationary Engineers in performing maintenance and repair work in a boiler-room facility; and perform other necessary duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  Two years of employment in the Maryland State class of Maintenance Worker III or equivalent level State class.

OR

Education:    Completion of the fifth grade.

Experience:  Four years’ employment in any combination of two or more of the maintenance trades such as carpentry, electricity, metalwork, welding, painting, plastering, plumbing, air-conditioning, refrigeration, steam fitting, masonry, and the other trowel trades.

NOTE:

1.  Graduation from an accredited vocational-technical high school (e.g. Carver, Merganthaler, Eastern, etc.) may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
