Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a field sanitarian for Howard County Health Department, Bureau of Environmental Health, a regulatory agency charged with responsibility for prevention of disease transmission through environmental factors. Various inspections and complaint follow-ups are conducted on licensed Retail Food Service Facilities in Howard County in accordance with applicable regulatory standards intended to protect the public's health. This position is assigned to the Food Protection Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications:
- Experience with food safety
- Experience with educating a group of individuals on regulations or other similar information

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a certificate of eligibility to be licensed as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists. **Please be sure to include a copy of your current licensure with your completed application.**

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated.  The evaluation may be a rating of your application based on your education, training and experience as they relate to the requirements of the position.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Please report all related education, experience, dates and hours of work.  For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.  All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date.  We will not consider information submitted after this date.  Applicants certified to list will receive eligibility for a period of one (1) year.  Eligibility may be extended beyond one (1) year period.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The applicant must meet the educational requirements in at least one of the three options below to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists in order to apply for this position.

1.  Has graduated from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in the chemical, physical, biological, or environmental sciences, as defined in regulation, including a minimum of 60 semester credit hours or the equivalent quarter credit hours of chemical, physical, biological, and environmental sciences acceptable to the Board which includes at least one laboratory course in two of the following fields:

A.    Chemistry;
B.    Physics;
C.    Biology;
D.    Geographic information systems; or
E.    Soil science; and
F.    A course in mathematics.

2.  Has graduated from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree that includes a minimum of 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent quarter credit hours in the chemical, physical, biological, and environmental sciences acceptable to the Board, which includes at least one laboratory course in two of the following fields:

A.    Chemistry;
B.    Physics;
C.    Biology;
D.    Geographic information systems; or
E.    Soil science; and
F.   A course in mathematics.

3.  Has graduated from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in public or environmental health science that includes a minimum of 30 semester credit hours or 45 quarter credit hours of chemical, physical, biological, or environmental sciences acceptable to the Board and obtained at the baccalaureate or master’s level, which includes at least one laboratory course in two of the following fields:

A.   Chemistry;
B.   Physics;
C.   Biology;
D.   Geographic information systems; or
E.   Soil science;
F.   A course in mathematics; and
G.  Three months of internship approved by the Board if not previously completed.

 

How to Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility and get placed on the list of qualified candidates for Environmental Health Specialist positions.

1.       Request an official copy of your school transcript.  The applicant’s educational background must be verified by official transcripts sent directly from the college or university to the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists located at 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21215. Any applicant who attended more than one academic institution should note section 2 of the general instructions, which are attached to the form.

2.       Submit the application (see links below) to the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists  along with the $100.00 application fee.  The check should be made out to the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

3.       The Board will review your application and issue a Certificate of Eligibility that will allow you apply for this job and any other Environmental Health Specialist position throughout the state of Maryland.  The certificate is valid for one year and can be renewed after it has expired with a $50.00 renewal fee.

 

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
