Seasonal Contractual

Three (3) vacancies (two full-time / one part-time)

Contract Period: Not to exceed ten (10) months

LOCATION OF POSITION

Elk Neck State Forest, North East, Maryland (Cecil County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Central Region is currently accepting applications for two full-time and one part-time seasonal contractual Trails/Maintenance Worker positions located at Elk Neck State Forest, Cecil County, Maryland. The selected candidates will be responsible for all duties associated with the day to day operations of Elk Neck State Forest's hiking trails and all facilities within the forest.

Job duties will include maintenance of over 16 miles of hiking trails, cleaning and maintaining restrooms, maintaining driving roads, overseeing shooting range activities and documenting forest activity and general maintenance of the area. Candidates in these positions will assist with wildland fire suppression as needed. Selected candidates will be the first line of contact with State Forest visitors and will need to have good communication skills, as well as knowledge of the forest rules and regulations. Good customer service skills are a key component of these positions. Selected applicants will also perform other duties as necessary to facilitate the operations of Elk Neck State Forest.

Please note, weekend, holidays and evening hours are required for these positions. Applicants must be able to work independently in a remote area of Elk Neck State Forest.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following skills and experience; please include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications.

1. Experience in hiking trail management and maintenance of facilities with an emphasis on working knowledge of forest and park operations.

2. Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment to include skid steers, road graders, back hoes, bull dozers and agricultural tractors.

3. Possession of or the ability to obtain a CDL driver’s license.

4. Experience with mowing operations to include operating a zero turn riding mower, weed eater and towing and backing a utility trailer with a motor vehicle.

5. Experience operating a chainsaw or chainsaw certification.

6. First aid and CPR training.

7. Trade experience to include carpentry, electrical systems and plumbing.

8. Ability to lift 50 lbs as these positions perform arduous duties.

9. Prior experience and certification as a wildland firefighter.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
