Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Resource Assessment Service, is currently accepting applications for a seasonal Sailor II. This position performs maintenance duties and operational tasks for the shipboard activities of various scientific groups that are performing research, monitoring, high precision surveys, and ecological assessment activities aboard the 51ft. research vessel (R/V KERHIN) that operates in the Chesapeake Bay, its major tributaries, and the Atlantic Ocean. An individual in this position must possess basic seamanship skills, mechanical skills and awareness. This individual is expected to be able to make critical judgment calls during complex sampling operations while operating potentially hazardous machinery and prevent injuries to scientific personnel and damage to the vessel or scientific equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: One year of experience engaged in the performance of ordinary sailor or deckhand duties aboard a vessel.

Note:

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the sailors and marine oilers classifications sailors and marine oilers specialty codes in the sailors and marine oilers field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this class may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. In accordance with The Annotated Code of Maryland, Labor and Employment Article , Section 3-213, persons appointed to this classification must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

3. The persons appointed to this classification will be subject to call twenty-four hours a day and may be required to be present for duty on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
