Introduction

This internal recruitment is limited to current Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment (MANTA) employees only.

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

MANTA Field Office, Annapolis, MD (Anne Arundel County) 

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Resource Assessment Service, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist I. The selected candidate will be responsible for collecting water quality data throughout the State of Maryland. Water quality sampling will be conducted from boats, bridges, piers and within streams. Sampling is conducted year-round and this position will require being on-call for weekend storm sampling. Office duties include cleaning, maintenance and calibration of sampling equipment, preparation of sampling/laboratory supplies and delivery of samples to the laboratory.

The selected candidate must be willing to work long and flexible hours, including on-call duty for storm sampling on weekends. Candidate must be comfortable working aboard boats, from bridges and in streams under various weather conditions. Candidate must be able to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. This position may require carrying heavy equipment over rough and uneven terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For education obtained outside of the United States (U.S.), you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the U.S., please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.html with the application.

Education: A degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

1. Experience and/or training in collecting water quality data (e.g. biological, chemical, physical) is preferred.

2. Experience in laboratory work or sample processing is preferred. 

3. Experience using environmental monitoring instrumentation is preferred.

4. Boating experience is preferred.

5. Certification in Maryland Boater's Safety Education is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
