The main purpose of this position is to act as a research and development scientist for the core sequencing laboratory unit by conducting applied research to develop new laboratory testing procedures for infectious disease agents at the Maryland State Public Health Laboratory as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable and hereditary diseases, and environmental hazards in conjunction with the CDC federal programs for Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC/ACA), Emerging Infectious Disease Program (EIP) and Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) testing initiatives.

Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One year of experience performing public health applied research and development in a university, private or public health laboratory system.

Note: 1. Possession of a doctorate from an accredited college or university in any of the disciplines noted above may be substituted for the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

Qualified candidates must possess a minimum of one year experience performing whole genome sequencing and analyzing data (a doctorate level with research using WGS may be subsitituted for this experience requirement).  At least one course in molecular biology and once course in bioinformatics is required.

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
