Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to act as a full performance scientist in the Division of Virology and Immunology under the general supervision of a supervisor/manager. The scientist will directly perform Arbovirus testing, hepatitis testing, Mumps testing, cell/tissue/bacterial culture, legionella testing, rabies-DFA, RFFIT, rabies PCR/sequencing, etc. This includes handling of zoonotic disease specimens, blood samples, cell cultures, etc. This position will conduct specialized molecular biology based procedures/assays, traditional virology, and/or serological methods to detect various agents. This position will interpret and report test results to submitters as well as undertake quality assurance measures as required. This position may be required to obtain licenses/vaccinations as needed. These and other duties will be performed as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of Maryland citizens from various disease agents. This testing and duties is performed in conjunction with the federal Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) grant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Note:

1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess Bachelor of Science degree in a biological science discipline with at least one course in biology and one course in biochemistry; medical clearance is required to wear N95/ or PAPR respirator to perform virology based assays and experience performing testing in a clinical laboratory environment.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have sound knowledge of proper handling of potentially infectious specimens/samples including universal precautions, microscopy, principles of virology based assays and experience testing in a clinical laboratory environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
