Introduction
This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of the Environment. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only. The resulting cert list will be maintained for one year. Persons interested in future vacancies within the classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position involves the planning, directing, developing and implementing activities of the Radioactive Materials Inspection Section. This Section is managed through three (3) subordinate Health Physicists. Health Physics is the area of environmental health engineering that deals with the protection of individual and population groups against the harmful effects of radiation. The Supervisor of this Section will be responsible for Statewide oversight that includes radioactive material inspections, investigations, enforcement actions, facility decommissioning, emergency response and financial assurance in order to assure that users of radioisotopes are conducting their licensed activities in a safe and legal manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: Five years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for required education.
2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or other related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for three of the required years of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for two years of the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in mathematical, biological, or physical science for one year of the required experience.
5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.
6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

Experience with supervising employees in a technical or regulatory setting;

Be Qualified as a Radioactive Materials Inspector in accordance with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Inspection Manual Chapter 1248B titled, "Formal Qualifications Program for Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs, Material Health Physics Inspector Qualifications Journal;

A Certified Health Physicist;

An Authorized Medical Physicist or Radiation Safety Officer on a Federal or State Nuclear Material License:
It is also preferred that the selected candidate has a Bachelors Degree in a Science (ie. Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics).

EXAMINATION PROCESS
Your application is part of the examination process. The assessment will be a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of this position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate educational and employment information on your application. Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees. Education credentials and experience verification will be completed by the Appointing Authority. If you are scheduled to complete an education or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process, if one is required. Please note that you will be required by the appointing agency to provide proof upon hire of all certifications, licenses, educational and work experiences.
