The Air and Radiation Management Administration, Radiological Health Program is recruiting for a Health Physicist Supervisor. This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of the Environment. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only. The resulting cert list will be maintained for one year. Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to provide leadership, direction, and supervision to the staff of the inspection and enforcement section of the Radiation Machines Division (RMD) of the Radiation Health Program (RHP). The incumbent in this position guides and directs the activities of seven radiation health physicists who are responsible with performing regulatory inspections for the division. The incumbent in this position reviews the quality of responses, corrections, and repairs needed to satisfy the resolution of cited violations and prepares the documents necessary for enforcement actions. The incumbent will also provide input for regional and national decisions that strengthen the program. The incumbent in this position works with other state and local agencies to support the goals and purpose of the program. The incumbent will stand-in for the RMD Division Chief as requested in his/her absence to attend meetings, provide analysis, respond to priority correspondence, and to make decisions as required.
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: Five years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards.
1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for required education.
2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or other related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for three of the required years of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for two years of the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute a Master's degree in mathematical, biological, or physical science for one year of the required experience.
5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.
6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:
Excellent writing skills;
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint);
Experience supervising a professional staff;
Experience conducting performance appraisals of staff;
Professional customer service experience interacting with internal and external customers in a business setting;
Experience making decisions based on statistical data;
A bachelor’s degree in the Sciences (i.e., Biology, Environmental Science, Physics).
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
