Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this job involves diagnosis and treatment provided to offenders who are mentally ill, or have a mental disorder, to help diminish the probability of harm to themselves or others

POSITION DUTIES

Conducts assessment and evaluation of inmates using standardized instruments and interview techniques.

Performs specialized evaluation services to include but are not limited to comprehensive psychological evaluation, i.e.; cognitive assessments, personality assessments, dementia screenings, neuropsychological screening and identification of underlying psychoses.

Conducts family death and serious illness notification with referral from custody or medical.

Develops treatment plans and provides treatment to inmates using individual or group therapy.

Provides acute care mental health services for crisis cases.

Coordinates services with other staff such as case management, social work, addictions and custody.

Initiates aftercare planning for transition of mental health care from prison to free society.

Provides consultation to management, medical contractor and attorneys regarding diagnosis, treatment, risk management, prognosis and behavioral management.

Attends Chief Psychologist staff meetings.

Maintains active lists and uses appropriate data management for statistics that are required for Director of Mental Health.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university acceptable to the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Experience: Four years of experience providing psychological services, two years of which must have been in a correctional setting. Two years of the experience must have been after completion of the doctoral degree.

Note: 1. A twelve month internship required for the doctoral degree may be substituted for one year of general experience.

2. Candidate may substitute U.S. Armed Force military service experience as a commissioned officer in Clinical Psychology classifications or Psychology specialty codes in the Psychology field of work on a year-for-year basic for the required experience and education

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists prior to permanent appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license has been obtained, submit a copy of the license to the Department of Budget and Management to remove pending status.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior to probationary appointment, candidates must meet all selection standards as set forth in the Code of Maryland Regulations by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Candidates who receive a probationary appointment must satisfactorily complete a prescribed training program prior to permanent appointment. Selection standards of the Correctional Training Commission may be obtained from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
