Introduction

The Maryland Department of Health’s Developmental Disabilities Administration oversees the operation the Potomac Center. The Potomac Center is a State Residential Center and is responsible for the provision of needed services to people who have intellectual disabilities admitted to the facility while working to integrate these people into less restrictive settings in the community.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

This is the entry level for staff psychologists with a master’s degree. The specific duties of employees in this class are determined by the program objectives of the agency or institution. These involve dealing with problems related to mental health, emotional disturbances, developmental deviations and other disabling conditions. Under the supervision of a licensed psychologist, this position may perform the following duties:  select, administer, score and interpret psychological tests to assess intellectual functioning, personality structure, interests, aptitudes and other psychological factors; develop interpretive conclusions to determine appropriate classifications, treatment plans and/or rehabilitative goals; participate in various forms of interviewing and psychotherapeutic activities with patients, clients or inmates; make recommendations based on the application of a wide range of projective and objective tests; render psychological interpretations of behavioral patterns of patients, clients or inmates; maintain therapy progress notes; provide psychological consultation to staff members and community agencies; provide psychological counseling to parents of physically and/or mentally handicapped children; and, participate in staff meetings, training of students, and programs providing special community services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Master’s degree in Psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university in a program acceptable to the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Experience: None.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior to being appointed the candidate must apply to the Board of Examiners of Psychologists for an exemption from licensure. Failure to obtain an exemption within six months of employment will result in termination, unless the Board grants an extension.
