Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist the Medical Examiner in the performing of medicolegal autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death. This position will eviscerate bodies(which requires knowledge of human anatomy), remove organs for dissection, and collect specimens for toxicology, microbiology, virology, and any other necessary studies dependent on the case and as directed by the medical examiner. This position may also be responsible for restocking of supplies, collection of trash, cleaning/disinfecting surgical instruments and/or equipment, and/or performing general office duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience embalming or assisting in the performance of autopsies on humans.

Notes:

1. Associate of Arts degree in Mortuary Science may be substituted for the required experience.

2. Experience embalming or assisting in the performance of autopsies on humans may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mortician classifications or Mortuary Affairs Specialist or Mortician specialty codes in the Autopsy field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate for this position will possess experience assisting in the performance of autopsy examinations and lifting/moving human remains.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
