Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Calvert Marina, Solomons, MD (Calvert County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division, is currently accepting applications for a full-time Sailor II position located at Calvert Marina in Solomons, Maryland. This position performs maintenance duties and operational tasks for the shipboard activities of various scientific groups that are performing research, monitoring, high precision surveys, and ecological assessment activities aboard the 51ft. research vessel (R/V KERHIN) that operates in the Chesapeake Bay, its major tributaries, and the Atlantic Ocean. An individual in this position must possess basic seamanship skills, mechanical skills and awareness. The selected candidate is expected to be able to make critical judgment calls during complex sampling operations while operating potentially hazardous machinery and prevent injuries to scientific personnel and damage to the vessel or scientific equipment.

Note: Due to the nature of work, the selected candidate will be required to be on call 24 hours/day due to tidal schedules, sampling protocols, and emergencies, regardless of weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One year of experience engaged in the performance of ordinary sailor or deckhand duties aboard a vessel.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the sailors and marine oilers classifications sailors and marine oilers specialty codes in the sailors and marine oilers field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.    

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this class may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. In accordance with The Annotated Code of Maryland, Labor and Employment Article , Section 3-213, persons appointed to this classification must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

3. The persons appointed to this classification will be subject to call twenty-four hours a day and may be required to be present for duty on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
