Introduction

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland’s insurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers’ and insurance professionals’ compliance with State law.  Through the diligence of a highly professional staff of market analysts, financial analysts, accountants, lawyers, law enforcement officers, actuaries, complaint investigators, and others, the MIA works to facilitate a strong and competitive insurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.  Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for lawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities.

The MIA is charged with a broad range of responsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriers and insurance producers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct of financial examinations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and the review and approval of rates and contract forms.  The MIA investigates reports of consumer fraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners, and/or property insurance.  Insurance carriers are subject to market conduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law.  The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, which participates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of individual consumers annually.

POSITION DUTIES

The Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit (CEAU) is recruiting for a contractual Outreach Staffer Trainee/Bi-Lingual (Spanish and English) Translator.  This individual must be fluent in both languages for speaking, reading, and writing purposes.  This position is responsible for attending and staffing outreach events that includes many evenings and weekends; assisting with the operation of the CEAU Rapid Response Program; and handling disaster response for those insured in the State of Maryland.  The incumbent will provide information to consumers on all lines of insurance and will assist in identifying outreach opportunities, scheduling events, and networking with potential agency partners.  Possession of a vehicle and valid driver’s license is required for extensive in-state travel (approximately 60-70%).  This position involves special physical demands such as the ability to lift 50 plus pounds, climb ladders, lift and set up supplies and exhibits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six months experience performing marketing or outreach related functions. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bi-Lingual (Spanish and English)

Experience in the insurance industry as an agent, customer service representative, claims adjuster, underwriter, or related experience is preferred.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
