Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.

We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as needed basis to temporarily assist in the classrooms on any given day.

Main Purpose of Job

Substitute teacher aides are responsible for the implementation of student instructional programs and daily schedules as directed by the teacher.  Candidates must comply with and support MSD's regulations and policies.  Substitute teacher aides need to be available on an on-call basis.

POSITION DUTIES

Candidates must accommodate and follow each behavior support plan for individual students, including daily self-care, assist with the arrival and dismissal of students, and supervise students during off campus instruction.

Candidates must provide a safe environment for students at all times.

Candidates must maintain strict confidentiality of students and school personnel information, exceptional organizational skills, effective classroom management, strong written communication, and experience working with a diverse student population, including underserved students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED required.  Fluency in ASL and written English required.  Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred.  Knowledge of students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying educational background required.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Deaf Community preferred.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
