Introduction

The Maryland State Treasurer's Office is seeking a qualified, ambitious professional to serve as the Deputy Director of Insurance, reporting directly to the Director of Insurance.

Main Purpose of Job

The Deputy Director supervises all activities of Division management staff and performs all tasks related to the management of the State’s Insurance Program in the absence of the Director.  The Deputy acts to directly support the Insurance Director in carrying out the Division’s mission, ‘to act as a steward for the State Insurance Trust Fund (with a current balance of over $20 Million), to procure all of the State’s 55± commercial insurance coverages in order to protect the State’s Trust Fund from catastrophic loss, to ensure compliance with State laws and regulations, to provide oversight on loss control and litigation, and to ensure proper oversight of the Division’s Claims Unit matters which fall under the Maryland Tort Claims Act.’

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements:  Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum of 7 years experience in settling multi-line claims such as property, casualty, bodily injury, liability, automotive and/or marine insurance; include experience in commercial insurance and/or public sector environment
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience specifically in insurance-industry management
  • Knowledge of State  and/or local government tort claims act(s)
  • AIC, CPCU, ARM, AU or other insurance industry designation or related course work

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications will be admitted to examination for the classification.  Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.  Only those individuals whose applications reflect the necessary education and experience will be considered, so please describe all relevant experience and education in detail.
