The main purpose of the Meteorologist III position at MDE is to maintain and improve air quality in order to protect the health and welfare of Maryland citizens and the environment of Maryland, while benefiting both community life and economic development in Maryland.

The primary purposes of this position are:

1)  Conduct and review dispersion and photochemical modeling in support of the program's criteria pollutant objectives;

2)  Maintain a criteria pollutant emissions and stack parameters data base for modeling purposes and complete the necessary analysis of air quality modeling results required for the preparation of modeling demonstration reports required for attainment plans and for state implementation plans (SIP);

3)  Develop and implement a variety of technical approaches to evaluate dispersion and photochemical modeling results;

4)  Develop and implement a variety of modeling analysis techniques needed to analyze potential air pollution control strategies prior to their inclusion in Maryland regulations for use in State SIPs;

5)  Review all modeling documentation submitted to ARMA pertaining to NAAQS/PSD, criteria pollutants, and special  studies related to dispersion and photochemical modeling;

6)  Prepare clear and concise technical reports and presentations that convey the results of dispersion and photochemical modeling to management, the general public, and scientific experts. 

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology or atmospheric physics from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience as a meteorologist conducting air quality research and forecasting and running meteorological models to test, review, verify and evaluate the effectiveness of air quality control strategies.

Note:

1. A Master of Science degree in meteorology or atmospheric physics from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.  

One year of experience as a meteorologist conducting air quality modeling to test, review, verify and evaluate the effectiveness of air pollution control strategies.

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

• Experience preparing and reviewing modeling protocols for permit applications
• Experience with geographical information system (GIS) techniques
• Experience preparing a critique of dispersion and photochemical modeling completed by other organizations

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
