Main Purpose of Job
This position provides protection of the public health through an effective regulatory, inspection and education program which promotes proper food handling, safe preparation procedures and sanitary preparation conditions. An Environmental Health Specialist Trainee is the entry level of work at a local health department performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations. Employees in this classification do not supervise. Employees in this classification receive close supervision from an Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor or Environmental Health Specialist Program Supervisor. Employees may be subject to 24-hour call-in and overtime. The work may be performed at private homes, businesses, construction sites and other community settings where travel is required and the environment is often unpredictable. Employees are required to observe infection control precautions in order to prevent contamination and the spread of disease. On some assignments, employees may be required to wear safety equipment and may be required to lift and carry objects weighing over 50 pounds.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a certificate of eligibility to be licensed as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists. A copy of this certificate (Certificate of Eligibility for Obtaining Employment) must accompany your application. You must have this certificate to qualify.
2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS
The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
