Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Conservation Jobs Corps (CJC) is a six-week summer employment program for disadvantaged youth ages 14 – 17 operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service.  CJC uses outdoor experiential activities and the power of nature to enrich the lives of youth and prepare them for future success in the workforce.  The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions for CJC Naturalist/Bus Chaperone for the CJC Program.  You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the specific location(s) of interest for this recruitment.

 

The CJC Naturalist/Bus Chaperone positions; two (2) located at Patapsco Valley State Park (Hilton Area), two (2) located at Patapsco Valley State Park (McKeldin Area) and four (4) located at Gunpowder Falls State Park (Hammerman Beach Area), will be responsible for the facilitation (with assistance of a CJC Crew Chief) of outdoor recreation activities and environmental enrichment activities.  This includes all Pre-Activities, Field Studies, Post Activities, canoeing, fishing, archery, hiking and swimming.  This position will require the distribution and inventory of all materials required for each activity.

 

In addition, the CJC Naturalist/Bus Chaperone will be required to ride one of the buses departing at 7:00 a.m. from Baltimore City that transport the CJC Corps Members to their assigned park location and ride back on the bus to their designated bus pick-up location at the end of each day, arriving at 3:00 p.m.  The applicant must maintain a professional relationship with CJC Corps Members, maintaining all CJC rules and regulations while on the bus.

 

The CJC Naturalist/Bus Chaperone shall:

 

Provide direction and guidance to CJC Corps Members, ensure they utilize strategies provided in training to maintain a safe and educational work environment for youth, including but not limited to the following:

 

·                     Proper professional work ethic and behavior.

·                     Assist with regular crew-based Corps Member training and instructional presentations in critical areas related to safety and professional job performance including the following:

 

                        *  First-Aid and workplace safety

                        *  Environmental issues and conservation

                        *  Community relations

                        *  Work ethic

                        *  Communications

                        * Site-specific work project, goals and activities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Prior work experience with CJC and experience with youth.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business, administration, forestry, social sciences, or a natural resources related field is preferred.

 

Previous work experience with at-risk youth is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of current certification in CPR for adult/child and First-Aid is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must attend a mandatory training the week of Monday, June 20th to Friday, June 24th to be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (additional hours may be required and training dates subject to change).
