Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide direct social work services within a health care setting to clients in a special population, such as mentally ill, developmentally disabled, physically disabled, chronically ill, geriatric, maternity, family planning, adolescents or substance abusers; evaluate case situations and present information to other members of the health care team on the clients' families and social background pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; interview clients and family members to determine nature and degree of problems and arrange, as necessary, medical or psychiatric examinations to help identify problems pertinent to diagnosis and treatment; determine if a crisis situation exists and, if it does, immediately initiate appropriate intervention techniques; interpret psychiatric and other health care treatments to clients or families and help with personal and environmental difficulties which interfere with obtaining maximum benefits from that care; work with other members of a multi-disciplinary health care team to further their understanding of social and emotional factors underlying client's health problems; help clients to modify attitudes and patterns of behavior by increasing self-understanding and to respond constructively to treatment and assist in adjustment leading to and following the completion of treatment; work in close cooperation with public and private organizations to provide a plan of service to assist clients in achieving optimum social and health adjustment within the client's capacity; provide therapeutic counseling as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team; serve as the link between client, medical facility and the community; may develop within a multi-disciplinary health care team individual treatment programs for assigned clients; may be responsible for a small social services program; may provide general direction to workers engaged in other facets of the treatment programs; may act as a mentor providing advice and guidance to lower-level social workers, social work interns and social work students; may act as a consultant for other agencies; may determine client's eligibility for services; and perform other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Experience:

1. Two years experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an,approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.  Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker, Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Testing Unit.

2.  Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
