Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for increasing the understanding of public health issues and awareness of the Howard County Health Department's programming through internal and external stakeholder engagement, development and communication. This position supports, monitors, and coordinates agency activities related to the promotion and understanding of public health and awareness in Howard County. This position will coordinate community events, assist with the expansion of the departments social media presence, ensure the consistency of print materials, conduct public relations efforts, develop and communicate public information and materials concerning health-related issues for the Howard County Health Department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester credit hours in one or more of the following subjects: English, journalism, public relations, writing or other similar and related areas of study.

Experience: None

Note:

1. Additional experience in public information, public relations, journalism or other related experience in publicity or promotional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in public affairs specialist classification or public affairs specialty codes in the information and arts field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with current and emerging social media
- Experience/Knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization skills)
- Experience with website management

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
