Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service, is currently accepting applications for a Long Term Contractual Natural Resources Biologist I. The Biologist will assist in completing the Natural Areas Inventory project and other projects related to the implementation of the 2015 State Wildlife Action Plan. The Natural Areas Inventory (NAI) is a conservation planning tool that is being developed to provide information on significant natural resources for each county in an accessible, web-based format. The position will work with the NAI project team to fulfill the goals of the project.

The selected candidate will be responsible for writing, coordinating, and developing parts of the Natural Areas Inventory and assisting with other State Wildlife Action Plan implementation projects. Responsibilities will include drafting and editing sections of the Natural Areas Inventory, organizing and formatting data, assisting with organizing project meetings, providing assistance to staff working on the project, preparing targeted materials and assisting with outreach activities, and other related duties as assigned. The incumbent must have strong organizational, writing, and communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the development/writing of conservation plans. Candidate must be able to work independently and with others. Note: This position has limited hours and will not be extended.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.htm with the application.

Education: A degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None

Notes: 

1. Professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Experience in the development/writing of conservation pland and knowledge of Maryland's wildlife species is preferred.

Experience with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is preferred.

Experience using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
