This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The resulting eligible list will be used to fill positions in DPSCS Correctional facilities in Hagerstown, Maryland ONLY.

Main Purpose of Job

Performs clerical support for the Case Management Department and provide clerical support for other departments.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Provides clerical support to case managers, such as filing and typing letters, submitting requests, etc.
  • Enters information on the OCMS screen
  • Checks the change sheet daily for any changes in the inmate’s status and makes the appropriate paperwork updates
  • Answers phone calls from inmates families, other institutions, attorney’s and other outside agencies
  • Maintains schedules for inmates visits
  • Puts inmate base files in order and files in appropriate cabinets
  • Types detainers for the case managers, and mails to appropriate County offices
  • Makes institutional entries for attorneys and other visitors

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year performing secretarial or clerical work involving typing duties.

Notes:

 1. Additional secretarial or clerical experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Thirty credit hours with a major in secretarial science or office technology from an accredited college may be substituted at the rate of thirty credits for one year of experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical, or Office Services specialty codes in the Administrative Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

  • Excellent oral and writing communication skills.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This is a position specific recruitment to fill an existing vacancy at the Maryland Correctional Training Center -Hagerstown only.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated ability to accurately type on a typewriter or keyboard on a personal computer, computer terminal or word processor at a minimum of forty words per minute may be required, depending on the specific requirements of the position.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.

 

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
