Main Purpose of Job

This position will be responsible for researching regulations and statues pertinent to cases under the Board's jurisdiction as well as research case law for our board attorneys and other board discipline. This position will be delegated the task of drafting suspension orders, providing research and final review of the requested documents through the Public Information Act. Lasty, this position relieves the administration of the department from the operational details by performing the assigned duties outlined in the description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.

Notes: 1. Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.

2. Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have 3 or more consecutive years of experience as a legal secretary, legal assistant or paralegal including lititgation and administrative law experience. Candidates should be able to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills with evidence of preparing legal briefings, pleadings, affidavits and subpoenas, and maintaining case files, hearing schedules and public information responses.  This position requires the ability to perform complex statistical analysis and to respond to the needs of multiple constituencies. Lastly the successful candidate should be able to produce documents, correlate and track statistical data and apply Microsoft Office applications.  Associates degree in legal studies, criminal justice or human services is preferred. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
