Introduction

This is a 12 month position in the maintenance department of the Maryland School for the Deaf – Frederick Campus.  This position is designated as Essential Personnel.

Main Purpose of Job

Provide full performance level of plumbing work by repairing, installing, and maintaining plumbing systems, pipes, and other plumbing fixtures at the Maryland School for the Deaf, Frederick Campus to maintain the school's productivity and a safe campus environment.

POSITION DUTIES

Install, repair and maintain plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures for water, heating, air conditioning, and drainage systems;

Perform regularly scheduled maintenance services and minor repairs to building equipment items to include boilers, hydraulic heating systems, refrigeration equipment, cooling towers and ice chillers;

Fill pipe system with water, observe pressure gauges attached to pipes and adjust control valves to produce desired pressure;

Installs, makes plumbing repairs to, and maintains appliances such as sinks, water heaters, washing machines, sterilizers, dish washers, ice machines, and water coolers;

Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaking faucets, replacing broken pipes, opening clogged drains, and underground sewer lines;

Measures, cuts, threads, and replaces pipes, control valves, and couplings using wrenches, pipe cutters, and pipe-threading tools;

Covers pipes with insulating materials or protective coatings to reduce loss of heat and to prevent moisture condensation and corrosion;

Reviews work orders to estimate time, materials ,and equipment required to complete work project;

Performs other duties as assigned including snow removal when necessary to keep the campus operational.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Two years experience as a journeyman plumber, one year of which includes installing and repairing sanitary plumbing appliances.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the plumbing field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Must be willing to learn American Sign Language.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of a Maryland Journeyman/Gas Fitter License is required.

Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Work involves special physical demands such as lifting/pushing 50 pounds or more and climbing ladders.  Must be able to sit, squat, or stand for long periods of time.
