Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to accurately catalog / document all evidence coming into the Central Receiving Unit, MSP Forensic Sciences Division. Personnel will adhere to policies and procedures set forth by the Department and the Forensic Sciences Division that will ensure the integrity of each piece of evidence. Personnel manage a considerable amount of essential material which requires excellent organizational skills, initiative and resourcefulness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.  

Experience:  Two years of experience with administrative functions and handling/inventorying evidence.

Notes:  Education at an accredited college or university in either Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or Forensic Science may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience in a court of law testifying as to chain of custody or evidence handling procedures

2. Experience communicating and working with local, state and federal agencies.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to testify in a court of law as an expert witness about the chain of custody and laboratory procedures.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to random drug testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 10.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

3. Employees are subject to call out 24 hours a day and; therefore, are required to provide a telephone number where they can be reached.

4. In accordance with Section 2-204 (b) (6) of the Public Safety Article, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination, submission of a DNA sample, and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for this recruitment will involve a review of each application.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list in the BEST, BETTER or QUALIFIED category.  The eligible list will be used by the hiring manager to fill this vacancy.  The list will be valid for one year.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
