Introduction

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director, Advertising and Communications of Tourism Development within the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary function of this position is to develop and execute marketing and communications plans and programs for the Advertising and Communications unit of the Maryland Office of Tourism to promote the state as the destination of choice to consumers through a variety of platforms: advertising, social and digital, content development and public relations.

POSITION DUTIES

Incumbent will work with contractors that develop and execute communication and marketing strategies including an advertising agency, a publication and content development contractor and a public relations firm; oversee the writing, editing and graphics of each publication; create and implement cooperative advertising or promotional programs with a variety of travel partners; analyze and monitor research, financial and demographic factors to maximize the effectiveness of the consumer and trade advertising campaigns.   Individual will supervise and direct the workflow of marketing, content developer, advertising and public relations specialists by assigning job tasks, facilitating interdepartmental communications and managing external communications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Communications or Public Administration with concentration in tourism, marketing, advertising or related field; and at least six years of administrative staff or professional work.  Three years of this experience must have been in consumer marketing in a tourism environment, overseeing and coordinating the general operations of a unit, managing and supervising a staff.  Equivalent education and experience will be accepted. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal , written, oral communications skills; experience with destination marketing with a proven track record of increasing sales and/or visitation to a geographic destination or attraction; considerable knowledge of the State of Maryland, its unique tourism assets and its industry leaders and stakeholders; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks; proficiency with current destination marketing, budgeting and accounting software; familiarity with digital and social media platforms and knowledge of industry trends.

Travel throughout the state and occasional travel outside the state is required.
