Introduction

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Tourism Development within the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts.

Main Purpose of Job

The primary function of this position is to manage and direct advertising, communications, development, sales, research and interactive services teams to implement strategic plans to grow Maryland as a highly competitive, desirable and successful destination.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsibilities include: developing and administering specified marketing programs; conducting market research and utilizing a competitive marketing strategy that promotes state-wide tourism assets, programs, events, cultural and recreational tourism resources; developing and managing targeted inter-jurisdictional investments to grow Maryland as a leading regional and national travel destination among cultural, heritage, adventure, business and vacation travelers.   Incumbent will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the organization in all aspects of its operations and mission; interface with key business, government, media and tourism industry leaders to represent the industry and communicate its positive impact on the State. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications or Public Administration with concentration in tourism, marketing, hospitality management or related field; and at least ten years of experience in developing and managing innovative and strategic tourism and hospitality marketing programs and managing and supervising a staff.  Equivalent education and experience will be accepted. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal , written, oral communications skills; experience with destination marketing with a proven track record of increasing sales and/or visitation to a geographic destination or attraction; considerable knowledge of the State of Maryland, its unique tourism assets and its industry leaders and stakeholders; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks; proficiency with current destination marketing, budgeting and accounting software; intimate familiarity with digital and social media platforms and knowledge of industry trends.

Frequent travel throughout the state and occasional travel outside the state is required.
