Introduction

The Maryland State Archives is recruiting for Summer Internship candidates. Any High school, undergraduate or graduate level college students attending Maryland schools or Maryland residents attending out-of-state schools are eligible to apply.  It is not necessary to be a history major to participate in the program, and students of other disciplines are encouraged to apply.

As the historical agency for Maryland, the State Archives is the central depository for government records of permanent value.  Records date from the founding of the Maryland Colony in 1634 to the present day.  The State Archives identifies, appraises, acquires, describes, preserves, and makes physically and electronically available (in a secure and dynamic environment) the permanent records of Maryland’s past, while providing reliable current information to citizens and public officials for the better administration of Maryland government and understanding of Maryland history.  The Archives describes Maryland state, county, and municipal government agencies, and their origin, functions, structure, personnel, historical evolution, reports, and other aspects of Maryland and its history; and encourages the study of Maryland government and history.  The agency also serves as the custodian of the state's fine art collections.

GRADE

Student Interns will receive an hourly wage, paid bi-weekly. Hourly rates are based on education level and range from $9.34 to $12.07 per hour.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is for an intern to serve as staff researcher for the Maryland State Archives project, Finding the Maryland 400. The project examines the military and peacetime careers of members of the First Maryland Regiment during the American Revolution. These men were Maryland's first war heroes, the men who held off the British at the Battle of Brooklyn (sometimes called the Battle of Long Island) in 1776 and allowed the rest of the Continental Army to escape. The incumbent will research and write biographies of these soldiers to be published online, utilizing a wide range of primary and secondary sources. Biographies will explore soldiers' military service, as well as their lives before and after the war, and place them into historical context. Incumbent will also maintain and regularly update the project's research blog with posts about the project, biographical subjects, and historical topics. POSITION DUTIES

Interns are expected to work 28 hours per week, starting on Wednesday, May 20th through Friday, August 14th. Intern will:

  • Research and write online biographies of members of the First Maryland Regiment.
  • Maintain and regularly update research blog.
  • Respond to related research inquiries and directives as needed.
  • Complete a mid-program internship survey
  • Attend a mid-program evaluation meeting
  • Complete and turn in a final project report
  • Complete and turn in a final program evaluation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be considered for an internship, you must:

Be a current student or recent graduate (within the last year) of undergraduate studies or graduate studies

AND

Be a current resident of the state of Maryland or an enrolled student in a Maryland school.

 

Possession of a bachelor's degree in history or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants with at least 3 credits hours of coursework in the areas of colonial, Revolutionary, early-National eras and/or Maryland history
or
One year professional experience in a position researching and documenting the areas of colonial, Revolutionary, early-National eras and/or Maryland history
are preferred.

Selection Plan

The following must be submitted prior to the closing deadline in order to be considered for the internship.  If submissions are missing, the application will be removed from consideration.  Late submissions will not be accepted. 

Applicants must submit:

  • Cover letter- (statement, in the form of a letter explaining how you will benefit from the program and how the agency will benefit from your participation)
  • Academic transcripts, both undergraduate and graduate, if applicable.
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member from current or most recent school
  • An academic writing sample to display strong writing ability for content, clarity, and grammar.(copy of a paper written for class is acceptable)
