Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Managing Director in its Investment Division.  This position is a management service position and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Director of the Agency.

Main Purpose of Job

The Managing Director assists in establishing strategic investment program management goals, particularly as they relate to private equity, as well as standards and controls to meet objectives. 

 

POSITION DUTIES

This position recommends and assists with determining appropriate structure of the private equity program;  provides direct leadership, oversight and management of professional investment staff, external investment managers and consultants; reviews and conducts due diligence on potential new private equity investment opportunities;  monitors performance of the private equity program;  provides guidance and recommendations for allocation of assets within the private equity area;  serves as an independent evaluator to ensure that investment concerns are appropriately monitored, evaluated, resolved and communicated;  develops and applies quantitative analytics to monitor and mitigate various types of risk associated with an investment strategy;  and analyzes and communicates performance results.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  Possession of a CFA/CAIA or advanced degree in Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or similar fields of study.

EXPERIENCE:  Eight years of professional investment experience.  The candidate should also be knowledgeable regarding best practices to promote and maintain an equal employment opportunity work environment that is in compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.

 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications include a candidate with a CFA and/or CAIA certification and an advanced degree in Finance, Business Administration, Public Administration, or similar field of study.  Preference will be given to candidates with five or more years of progressively responsible experience in investments. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
