Main Purpose of Job

This is the supervisory level of technical radio work involving the installation, repair, and maintenance of transmitters, receivers, and related radio equipment in accordance with Federal Communications Commission regulations. Workers at this level are regional supervisors overseeing the work of Radio Technicians, Radio Mechanics and assigned clerical staff.

POSITION DUTIES

Schedules, assigns and supervises the work of Radio Technicians and Mechanics engaged in the repair, maintenance, testing, calibration, assembly and installation of both stationary and mobile radios and related equipment such as power supply units and antennas;

Examines work completed by subordinates for technical sufficiency;

Modifies, constructs, maintains, checks accuracy and calibrates test equipment;

Maintains logs, files and repair and supply records;

Prepares various reports;

Evaluates existing shop procedures and recommends changes to improve the availability of equipment for operators and to improve overall network efficiency; Inventories and orders replacement parts, electronic components and supplies;

May recommend the purchase of operating and test equipment; Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Eight years experience in the repair of electronic communications equipment of which seven years must have included the repair of two-way FM radios.

Notes: 

1. Applicants may substitute successful completion of a one year program of study in radio electronics at a recognized training school, trade school, or college for up to one year of the required general experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Electronics Technician (Communications) classifications or Signal Corps, Aerospace Maintenance, or Data/Communications Maintenance specialty codes in the Aviation Communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

THIS IS AN INTERNAL RECRUITMENT FOR CURRENT MARYLAND STATE POLICE EMPLOYEES ONLY.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants are to possess either a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator license, a FCC Ship Radar Endorsement, a National Association of Business and Educational Radio certificate or an Associated Public Safety Communications Officers Incorporated certificate. All applicants must list their license or certificate number and expiration date on the application.

Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates may be given a medical examination to determine their ability to perform the duties of the job classification.

SELECTION PROCESS

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for this classification.  Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.  Successful candidates will be placed on the employment Eligible List categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED OR QUALIFIED and remain eligible for consideration for at least one year from the date of examination.  The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application.  Report all experience and education that is related to this position. Applicants may be given a physical examination and will be subject to an interview, background investigation, polygraph examination and substance abuse testing
