Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 193,000 active members and more than 137,000 retirees and beneficiaries. 

The Agency is currently recruiting for an Administrative Officer II to work in its Benefits Processing Unit.

POSITION DUTIES

The primary responsibility of this incumbent is to serve as a lead worker of a small team of professional, administrative staff.  This lead worker will assist the supervisor of the team in effectively and efficiently processing retirement estimate requests (17,000 annual requests) received from members who are at or who are nearing eligibility for retirement.  Processing of these requests involves calculating the members’ ages, the correct amounts retirement credit they have earned, determining if they are eligible for retirement benefits, calculating Average Final Salaries, and projecting retirement credit that will be earned up through their requested retirement dates.  This incumbent will help assign work among staff, will approve the worksheets created by staff, and will train and assist staff in their daily work 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Two years experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Two plus years of experience leading a team of employees

2.  Two plus years of using MS Access in a work environment (this experience must be clearly reflected in your application)

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
