Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Engineering and Construction unit, in Annapolis, Maryland is currently seeking a Historic Sites Surveyor/Architectural Historian to survey and document historic structures located in State parks in the Eastern and Western regions that were directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Working closely with the DNR Historic Preservation Planner and the Administrator of Research & Survey with the Maryland Historical Trust, the Historic Sites Surveyor will prepare Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties (MIHP) and Determination of Eligibility (DOE) forms. In addition, work will include the development of a historic context for New Deal-era resources in Maryland parks, as well as an analysis of existing information on the parks to identify data gaps and levels of risk to historic resources.

Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct architectural surveys of historic and cultural sites in approximately eight designated Maryland parks in the Eastern and Western regions of the state, including site visits and the preparation of MIHP and DOE forms using the appropriate standards and guidelines.
  • Develop a comprehensive historic context for New Deal-era resources in all DNR units, with a focus on surveyed areas as primary illustrative examples.
  • Coordinate with DNR units in the Eastern and Western regions to identify potential historic resources, which may not be recorded in DNR's GIS data or the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties. Compare this inventory to existing data to identify information gaps and identify levels of risk to the historic resources. The product will be in spreadsheet form. If time permits, the evaluation will be extended to other DNR regions.
  • Attend project meetings with DNR and MHT staff as necessary.
  • Manage documentation necessary for grant reimbursement from the National Park Service; ensure conformance of all sub-grant projects with the NPS guidelines; and complete final project reporting for the sub-grant program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of the required experience must be in architectural surveys and the research of   historic resources.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience conducting and overseeing architectural field surveys and scholarly research is preferred but not required.

Knowledge of computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office, GIS, Adobe Photoshop, Sketch Up and/or Auto Cad is preferred but not required.

Experience in survey and research of New Deal-era resources is preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. The ability to attend occasional evening or weekend meetings.

2. Field work sometimes requires hiking through overgrown wooded areas to reach sites.
