Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Conservation Corps (CJC) is a six-week summer employment program for disadvantaged youth operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. CJC uses outdoor experiential activities and the power of nature to enrich the lives of youth and prepare them for future success in the workforce. The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions for CJC Site Coach for the CJC Program. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the specific location(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment.

The CJC Site Coach is responsible for supervising all CJC Crew Chiefs at a particular park or area of the park. CJC Crew Chiefs are directly responsible for supervising crews of approximately 6 youth per crew. The CJC Site Coach is responsible for carrying out the missions and goals of the program at the field level, articulating and interpreting the program vision for youth development and conservation service to the staff, to youth, and to other program partners. The CJC Site Coach provides leadership, direction and motivation for the staff as they relate to CJC Corps Members and reinforces training strategies for CJC Crew Chiefs to employ in their youth development. The CJC Site Coach provides daily reports to the Program Director regarding attendance, operational personnel and disciplinary issues, while coordinating with Maryland Park Staff for project completion and general timelines.

The CJC Site Coach shall:

Provide direction and guidance to CJC Crew Chiefs and ensure that CJC Crew Chiefs utilize strategies provided in training to maintain a safe and educational work environment for youth, including but not limited to the following:

  • Proper professional work ethic and behavior;
  • Ensure that projects are properly, professionally and completely executed to the satisfaction of site managers.
  • Manage the data associated with work project assignments as required by the CJC Program Director.
  • Conduct regular crew-based corps member training and instructional presentations in critical areas related to safety and professional job performance including the following:
      • First aid and workplace safety
      • Environmental issues and conservation
      • Community relations
      • Work ethic
      • Communications
      • Site-specific work project needs, goals and activities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Prior work experience with CJC and experience with children and youth.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, business, administration, forestry, social sciences, or a natural resources related field is preferred.

Previous work experience with at-risk youth is preferred.

Possession of current certification in CPR for adult/child and First-Aid is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must attend a mandatory training the week of Monday, June 15th to Friday, June 19th.
