Introduction

By law, DJS is a child-serving agency responsible for assessing the individual needs of referred youth and providing intake, detention, probation, commitment, and after-care services.  DJS collaborates with youth, families, schools, community partners, law enforcement, and other public agencies to coordinate services and resources to contribute to safer communities.

Thomas J.S. Waxter Children's Center located in Laurel, Maryland (Prince George's County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Cook II will be responsible for the proper preparation and cooking of food for the youth who are under the supervision of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.

POSITION DUTIES

The Cook II will perform as a Lead by training and providing oversight to Dietary Workers and/or Food Service Assistants. The Cook II will be responsible for providing high quality food service to the youth and staff located at the DJS Thomas Waxter Children's Center. The Cook II will provide safe and nutritious meals by adhering to standardized recipes and menus approved by the Department. The incumbent will adhere to food safety and sanitation practices according to the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).

The Cook II will apply food service principles and methods related to food handling, food preparation, and proper food storage and temperature control. The Cook II will be responsible for properly operating kitchen equipment, properly maintaining utensils and work areas, and keeping a accurate record of supplies used and the number of people served. The incumbent will be expected to perform other Food Service related work duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Three years of experience in food preparation at a public or governmental establishment, such as a restaurant, hospital or comparable institution involving the cooking of meats and vegetables and the preparation of salads and beverages.

Notes:

1. Graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in food service or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Culinary classifications or Food Services specialty codes in the Equipment Services and Facilities field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who possess a current/active ServSafe Certification or other comparable Food Service Certification are highly desired.

Candidates who possess a college degree in a Food Service-related discipline are highly desired (Culinary Arts, Food and Restaurant Management, etc.)

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
