LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Wildlife and Heritage Service, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist I position.  The selected candidate is responsible for conducting and coordinating wildlife response activities in DNR's Wildlife and Heritage Service Central Region.  Additional responsibilities include conducting Wildlife and Heritage Service educational, technical wildlife and land management activities in the Central Region.  The incumbent will supervise a Natural Resources Technician and will be based at the Bel Air Regional Service Center located in Bel Air, Maryland in Harford County.

The selected candidate will maintain regional readiness for and respond to wildlife emergencies as needed; supervise, coordinate and evaluate all responsibilities delegated to the regional wildlife response technician; coordinate and conduct regional efforts to mitigate wildlife damage by issuing permits to agricultural producers and other effected citizens; assist land management staff with habitat management and maintenance on wildlife management areas and other DNR lands; coordinate and participate in local/regional education programs, outreach events, and presentations to sportsmen's groups, schools and other citizen organizations about agency programs.

Responsibilities will involve the use of firearms and immobilization equipment, wildlife emergency resolution, heavy lifting, use of heavy equipment and boats, timely survey completion, administration of special-use wildlife permits, tracking inventory, and acting as the agency representative through regular public interactions in a variety of situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Specific coursework in wildlife management or wildlife management techniques.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This position is limited to candidates willing to accept employment in Harford County.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
