Main Purpose of Job

The Alcohol and Drug Professional Counselor Provisional is located at the Savage Mountain Youth Center in Garrett County, MD. This is an entry level of work, at the noncertified Master's degree level. The Alcohol and Drug Professional Counselor Provisional learns to provide counseling for substance use clients, with the most complex problems as defined by standard treatment criteria, under close supervision from a clinical supervisor, approved by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A master’s or doctoral degree in a health or human services counseling field from an accredited college or university approved by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists or completion of a program of studies judged by the Board to be substantially equivalent in subject matter and training.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have at least six months of experience counseling clients with substance use disorders and a letter of authorization to practice as a trainee from the MD Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.  If you possess a letter of authorization, please upload it with your application or fax to Linda Padgett at 410-333-4188.  

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. In accordance with Health Occupations Title 17 and Code of Maryland Regulations 10.58.07, candidates placed in this classification must apply for and receive a letter of authorization to practice as a trainee from the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists within 90 days of their date of hire.

2. Employees must successfully obtain certification or licensure from the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists as either a Certified Professional Counselor-Alcohol and Drug or a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor within one year of meeting the experience requirements for Certified Professional Counselor-Alcohol and Drug.

3. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in 
accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on the eligible list categorized as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified. Candidates shall be certified to the eligible list for one year.

The assessment will be a rating of your application based on your education, training, and experience as it relate to the requirements of the position. For education obtained outside the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
