LOCATION OF POSITION
Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service is curremtly accepting applications for a Natural Resources Technician III position located at LeCompte WMA Work Center, Vienna, Maryland. The selected candidate will perform land management, habitat management, and maintenance activities on a network of wildlife management and managed hunting areas in Caroline, Talbot, Dorchester and Wicomico Counties. Responsibilities will also include assisting with wildlife surveys, data collection, building, road, and parking area maintenance, and a variety of land management projects on public lands administered by DNR. Responsibilities may involve wildlife emergency resolution, timely completion of administrative paperwork, issuing special-use wildlife permits, coordination of public hunting / trapping programs, and acting as the agency representative through regular public interactions in a variety of situations. Work activities may involve use of firearms, immobilization equipment, animal restraint devices, pesticide application equipment, participation in prescribed burning projects, heavy lifting, use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, atv/utv's, agricultural/heavy equipment, and boats.
The incumbent will be subject to periodic adverse working conditions (hot/cold temperatures, rain/snow/ice, insects, mud, smoke, direct contact with wildlife, etc.).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management.
Notes:
1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Additional education beyond sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study can be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of wildlife habitat conservation principles and practices is preferred.
Experience with capture techniques and the collection of biological data used to monitor native wildlife populations is preferred.
Experience with the operation and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment such as farm tractors, farm implements, skid loaders, dozers, etc. is preferred.
