Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to maintain uninterrupted service of simple and complicated electrical equipment including ventilation, heating, air conditioning, lighting control panels, motors, pumps, compressors, and transformers etc. carrying 13,000 volts or more.  This work is at the journeyman level in electrical work.  The employee must be available for 24 hour on-call duty and be able to work evening, weekends, and holidays as needed.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Maintain high voltage equipment throughout the complex with well over one million square feet.
  • Maintain approximately 1500 to 2000 lighting fixtures, numerous electric receptacles, electrical control circuits, relays, timers, electric motors, transformers, compressors, heating and air conditioning equipment and ballasts.
  • Troubleshoot all electrical systems and equipment at the facilities as needed.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.
  • Read blueprints and use testing equipment such as multi-meters, amprobes, meggers, voltage testers, etc.
  • Provide estimates for new electrical installations and order supplies to complete jobs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: Five years of experience installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and control devices at commercial or residential buildings or other facilities.

Notes:

1. Additional experience as described above may be substituted on year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school or other vocational or technical school with a concentration in electricity may be substituted for three years of the required experience.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to applicants willing to accept employment in Baltimore City.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification who are assigned to facilities that mandate licensed electricians must possess a current license as a Master Electrician or other appropriate electrician license from a local board or from the Maryland State Board of Master Electricians, 500 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202-3651.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

You must possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – Verification will be completed by the appointing authority.  Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week.  You must include on your application the time you spent in such activity.  You must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act to be hired in the position for which you apply.
