Introduction

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Laboratories Administration now occupies a new five-story laboratory facility incorporating design strategies to achieve the Leadership in Energy and Design (LEED) Silver rating, which is equipped with innovative, and cutting-edge tools - to expand scientific testing capabilities to adapt to emerging threats; to enhance preparedness efforts in response to disease outbreaks and environmental hazards; and to pursue teaching partnerships within the local community. The Public Health Laboratory property is ideally situated in the heart of the scientific technology park at Johns Hopkins located adjacent to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Easily accessible by MTA transit system and metro, just minutes away from downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor waterfront community.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Laboratories Administration, Specimen Accessioning and Management Unit, Baltimore, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position will be to receive, accession, process and prepare specimens/samples for testing and to enter data in the computer system, and if necessary, expedite results for over 10,000 specimens/samples daily within the Laboratories Administration in its continuing mission of preserving the health and well being of Maryland citizens. The incumbent will also distribute specimens/samples to specific areas within the unit or to other Laboratories and be responsible for the data entry of demographics for various laboratories.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate of Arts degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years of professional experience performing public health, medical, or environmental laboratory testing.

Notes:

1. Completion of 60 credits from an accredited institution including 24 credits in medical laboratory technology or 24 credits of science courses including 6 credits in chemistry, 6 credits in biology, and 12 credits in any combination of chemistry, biology or medical technology, and the completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program or at least three months of laboratory training performing high complexity testing may be substituted for the required education.

2. A bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology may be substituted for the above specific education or training.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required required education and experience.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
